DNIPROPETROVSK NATIONAL UNIVERSITY

Dnipropetrovsk National University is a multifunctional modern educational and scientific complex which occupies an important place among the leading institutions of higher education and science according to numerous national and international ratings. It was found in summer of 1918 due to persistent efforts of the local intelligentsia and support of the prominent Ukrainian scientists V. I. Vernadsky, D. I. Bahaliy, M.P. Vasylenko, L. V. Pysarzhevsky. In fact, it was due to their joint petition that Hetman Skoropadsky’s government confirmed the decision to open a university. Nowadays it is intellectual pride of Prydniprovya region.

DNU Student Palace is situated in the 18th century building called "Potiomkin Palace" which is located in the central park of Dnipropetrovsk named after T. G. Shevchenko. The Palace was built in 1789 based on the project of the outstanding architect I. E. Starov who drew up the first general plan of the city on the River Dnipro. The interiors of the Palace impress visitors with unity of harmony and beauty. The stair-cased landing of the second floor is sustained by twelve marvelous columns which form a unique "vivid square". In 1918, Katerynoslav University was established and Potiomkin Palace became its first study hall. Vira Kholodna, a famous actress of the silent screen, took part in the opening ceremony of the building. Since its inception in 1918, the Student Palace has become a centre of culture and students’ recreational activities. When the Student Palace reunited with Dnipropetrovsk National University, it was reconstructed, which improved its facilities for leisure and recreation. In 1997 a unique gallery "Ukrainian Hetmans" was opened in the Palace. It is the only gallery in Ukraine which exhibits the portraits of Ukrainian hetmans from B. Khmelnytsky to K. Rozumovsky. This project was implemented by members of the Student Palace fine arts school as well as students and professors of the Faculty of Ukrainian and Foreign Philology and Fine Arts of Dnipropetrovsk National University.
